NT-proBNP Test Overview

NT-proBNP is a peptide released by the heart’s ventricles in response to increased wall stress and stretching.

Elevated levels indicate cardiac dysfunction, especially congestive heart failure (CHF).

Clinical uses include:

Diagnosing acute and chronic heart failure.

Differentiating cardiac vs. non-cardiac causes of shortness of breath.

Assessing severity and prognosis of heart failure.

Monitoring response to therapy.

The test is performed using a blood sample.

Analyte: NT-proBNP peptide in blood plasma.

Normal Range:

< 125 pg/mL (for patients < 75 years, non-acute setting).

< 300 pg/mL (to rule out acute heart failure).

Elevated Levels:

Suggestive of heart failure or other cardiac stress.

May also be elevated in renal dysfunction, pulmonary hypertension, or sepsis.

Clinical Use:

Confirms suspected heart failure.

Helps stratify risk and guide treatment.

Monitors disease progression and therapy effectiveness.
